Dorothy Garrigus Adams Award for Excellence in Fostering Professional Standards
Joanne M. Disch, PhD, RN, FAAN, Professor and Director of the Densford Center has spent her career encouraging and promoting the growth of professional standards for all nurses in order to increase nursing knowledge and quality of practice. For her accomplishments, the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International, selected Disch to receive this award at the Biennial Convention in November 2001 in Indianapolis, Indiana. The award is one of seven Founders Awards presented to six outstanding nurses and one chapter in recognition of the honor society's founders. Karen Feldt and Darlene Bjorkland Pain Management Award
Karen S. Feldt, Ph.D., RN, GNP and Darlene Bjorklund, MA, APRN, BC were awarded $3,000.00 from the American Society of Pain Management Nurses for their study "Improving Pain Assessment for Cognitively Impaired Elders." These funds, along with support from North Memorial Hospital and the Densford Center, will help them carry out their proposal study. Karen and Darlene are partners in the Clinical Scholars Program. The purpose of their research is to test an intervetion to improve pain assessment and documentation for cognitively impaired elders who have had surgery for a hip fracture. The intervention includes and educational program, self audit and mentoring for nurses. They also will conduct medical record reviews to determine if the improved assessment leads to lower pain severity scores. The award was given by ASPMN in March 2002. Karen and Darlene hope to be ready to present data on their research at the ASPMN meeting in February 2003.
